Advantages of Oxidation Ditch Process in Wastewater Treatment

April 30, 2025

Family, today let's talk about the amazing oxidation ditch process in sewage treatment! Why is it said to be powerful? Let's chat one by one.

Good treatment effect and guaranteed water quality

The oxidation ditch process has a great removal effect on various pollutants in sewage, such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, etc! Taking domestic sewage as an example, after using the oxidation ditch process for treatment, the effluent quality can steadily meet the national discharge standards, and even some indicators can be even better. If industrial wastewater is treated, such as printing and dyeing wastewater, food processing wastewater, etc., it can also decompose the difficult to degrade organic compounds in the wastewater, reduce the concentration of pollutants, and make the wastewater clean. This is like a super skilled cleaning expert who cleans all the dirt in the sewage thoroughly.

Simple construction and low construction cost

The construction form of the oxidation ditch is very simple, which is a closed circular ditch, combined with aeration equipment, inlet and outlet devices, etc. Compared with other complex sewage treatment processes, it does not require the construction of particularly complex structures, such as regulating tanks and primary sedimentation tanks, which can sometimes be omitted. In this way, when constructing sewage treatment plants, not only is the construction difficulty reduced, but the construction period can also be shortened significantly, and a large amount of construction costs can be saved. For example, if building a traditional sewage treatment plant costs 10 million yuan, using the oxidation ditch process may be enough for 8 million yuan, which can save a lot of money for urban construction.

Flexible operation and strong adaptability

The oxidation ditch is particularly flexible during operation, and can adjust operating parameters according to different water quality, water quantity, and treatment requirements. For example, if the water quality of the incoming water suddenly deteriorates and the concentration of pollutants increases, it can be ensured that the treatment effect is not affected by methods such as extending the aeration time and increasing the aeration amount. If the water volume suddenly increases, it can also adjust the hydraulic retention time to allow the sewage to stay in the oxidation ditch for an appropriate period of time, thereby treating the sewage normally. Whether dealing with domestic sewage or industrial wastewater, it can adapt well, like a versatile assistant that can handle any situation.

Less sludge production, easier treatment

The oxidation ditch adopts delayed aeration, and the sludge age is relatively long, which enables the sludge to be fully stabilized and digested in the oxidation ditch. So, the amount of excess sludge generated is relatively small, and compared to traditional activated sludge processes, the amount of excess sludge can be reduced by 30% to 50%. Moreover, the properties of these residual sludge are relatively stable, making it more convenient to handle. No longer need to spend a lot of time and cost on treating sludge, which can save a lot of energy and expenses for sewage treatment plants.

Reasonable dissolved oxygen gradient and excellent denitrification effect

The dissolved oxygen concentration in the oxidation ditch has a significant gradient change. In the aeration zone, the dissolved oxygen concentration is relatively high, which is an aerobic environment; As the water flows in the downstream area, the concentration of dissolved oxygen decreases, creating an oxygen deficient environment. The characteristic of alternating aerobic and anaerobic environments is particularly suitable for nitrification denitrification biological treatment processes. In the aerobic zone, ammonia nitrogen in wastewater can be converted into nitrate nitrogen by nitrifying bacteria; In the anoxic zone, denitrifying bacteria can reduce nitrate nitrogen to nitrogen and release it into the atmosphere, thereby achieving denitrification treatment of wastewater and ensuring that the nitrogen content of the treated water meets the standard.

Low comprehensive energy consumption, cost-effective and environmentally friendly

Although oxidation ditch has a good effect on treating sewage, it actually consumes not much energy. On the one hand, its aeration equipment is not evenly distributed along the length of the ditch, but is concentrated in several locations, which can maintain liquid flow, solid suspension, and oxygenation with a relatively low overall power density, naturally reducing energy consumption. On the other hand, when the mixed liquid in the oxidation ditch circulates, the circulating or convective mixing generated can enhance its own stirring effect. In order to maintain the speed of solid suspension, the required unit volume power is much lower than other systems. In the long run, it can save a lot of electricity bills for sewage treatment plants, which is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

It seems that the advantages of the oxidation ditch process in sewage treatment are not limited. It has good treatment effect, low cost, flexible operation, and low energy consumption. No wonder it is widely used now!
