Resin filter material is a porous insoluble exchange material and an indispensable filter material in water treatment.
Ion exchange resin is a common water treatment material, and the operation of water softeners mainly relies on the ion exchange resin inside the equipment. Sodium ions exchange with calcium and magnesium ions in the water, softening the hard water. The ion exchange resin continuously adsorbs hardness ions until saturation, and then regenerates in the salt tank before being put back into use. But during the long-term exchange and regeneration process, the ion exchange resin will fail. What is the service life of the ion exchange resin?
In general, the lifespan of resin is about one year, which means it needs to be replaced once a year; If imported resin is used, high-quality resin can be used for about 1.5 to 2 years, but the usage time is longer.
But in practical use, it still depends on the quality of the treated water. If the hardness of the raw water is too high and the resin operation is overloaded, the frequency of resin replacement needs to be increased. So, how to determine whether the resin needs to be replaced?
The simplest method is to observe the water output. If the hardness of the softened water is still above 3PPM and the water production is significantly reduced, it indicates that the ion exchange resin in the water softener has failed and needs to be replaced.

How to maintain ion exchange resin?
1. Ion exchange resin should be kept moist during storage and transportation to prevent it from drying out and causing resin breakage. If the resin becomes dehydrated during storage, it can be soaked in 10% concentrated saline water and gradually diluted. It should not be directly placed in water to prevent rapid swelling and cracking of the resin.
2. During winter storage, the resin should be stored in an environment of 5-40 ℃ to avoid overcooling or overheating, which may affect the quality of the resin. If insulation is not possible in winter, the resin can be stored in saline solution, and the concentration of saline solution can be determined according to the temperature.
3. During the use of resin, it is necessary to avoid contact with metal oil stains, organic molecular microorganisms, strong oxidants, etc., in order to prevent a decrease in the resin's ion exchange capacity or even loss of function. 4. Pre treatment must be carried out before using new resin. Usually, the resin is first expanded with water, and then inorganic impurities (mainly iron compounds) can be removed with 4-5% dilute hydrochloric acid. Organic impurities can be removed with 2-4% dilute sodium hydroxide solution and washed to near neutrality. If used in pharmaceutical preparation, it needs to be soaked in ethanol.
